How do we promote this site?

One of the key ideas for running this website is reaching people who are not irc and email users. How do we let them know about this site?

The usual suspects:

  • announce mail
  • promo on social
  • wiki
  • mentioning it personally
  • adding it to “get in touch”places when we find them.

Genuine question: before we promote it too heavy, do we move it to discuss.yoctoproject.org or are we happy keeping it as OE? The well documented division of Yocto vs OE does suggest that Yocto-scope would be more comprehensive, and users (in my experience) know of <handwaves> what we do more as “Yocto” instead of “OpenEmbedded”.

@rossburton

Yeah that was my very, very first question too. But with the simplified “OE = people, YP = business” mindset, I would actually suggest to keep it with OE first. A YP branding might get more traction, but probably also less discussion, more help-seeking. So I’d suggest to not move too fast, and rather give this OE-style, people-powered instance a good head start.

The eternal question … I do not know what the right answer is. What I do want to minimize is the bike shedding  Rather than bike shed this, I refer to one of the original documents: Yocto Project Aligns Technology with OpenEmbedded and Gains Corporate Collaborators - Linux Foundation

I do want to encourage help seeking here. One of the problems we have is not having a place for people to go for help. We probably need a category for help!

First, we need a mod to delete your double posts  Then we need a “help wanted” category, yes. But spreading out too many categories should be avoided as much as possible.

Fixed the double post. Seems like we need a small number of categories and use tags for fine grained things. Also there are sub categories. Ross and I have poked at both in the layer categories.

The key question is whether we’re making this official and going to use it? Personally, I could really do without “another place to look” and I hate web based forums but I do understand some people do want something. I was initially told this was a experiment. It was driven by the OE board and neither TSC have discussed it. The YP TSC has been pushing in a different direction (irc matrix bridge).

We could map both discussion.yoctoproject.org and discussion.openembedded.org to the same place and put both the OE and YP logos on it…

I’d also note people aren’t making double posts, the threading on this sucks.

I did have a double post, not sure how it happened. Can you see if you can make sure you get a weekly summary? There are some email options that are hard for me to sort out because I have too much power, and see too many options.

A matrix bridge would be an alternative to IRC, whereas this is an alternative to email.

You can press “mailing list mode” in settings if you want it to behave like a mailing list and mail you. Personally, I have the RSS feed for the site in my reader so I see new topics there and can decide if I want to follow them or not (and so get mail notifications).

We probably need to keep code separate from promotion. But an interesting suggestion!

Bumping this topic … One thing that surprised me from the post Workshop survey was how many people learned about the workshop via word of mouth. So anyone who reads this, tell several other people about it and ask them to engage us here.
